Subscription Increase Reminder
It was agreed at the SLHS June AGM that subscriptions should be increased, as the annual journal production and website maintenance costs now exceed the unwaged subscription, and almost equal the waged subscription. New rates, which take effect from 1st September, are £20.00 for waged members and £13.00 for unwaged/student members. This is the first increase since 2008. Members wishing to renew their 2021 subscription at the existing rate should do so by 31st August.
85 years of Workers' Music
The Working Class Movement Library and the Workers’ Music Association are holding a free joint online event on Thursday 26th August, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, to mark the WMA’s 85th anniversary. This will provide a resumé of WMA history/achievements and look at the challenges the WMA faces moving forward. New Links on the SLHS Website
Links to the websites of the North East Labour History Society – based in North East England – (https://www.nelh.net/) and the North West Labour History Society – in North West England – (https://www.nwlh.org.uk/) have been added to the Links page on the SLHS website. We can also report that the Irish Labour History Society is in the process of moving its website to a new address at http://www.irishlabourhistorysociety.com/ This is currently (late July) under construction.
Llafur Event Recordings
Llafur, the Welsh People’s History Society, has recordings of recent Society events, including one reflecting on histories of ‘race’ and empire in Welsh memorials and monuments; and, from July this year, International Co-operators’ Day, which explored the legacy and relevance of Robert Owen and the Welsh Co-operative Movement. Speakers at this event included Professor Chris Williams of University College, Cork; Liz McIvor of the Co-operative Heritage Trust; and Sian Williams from the South Wales MIners’ Library. The Communist Party of Great Britain and Anti-Racism
The next Socialist History Society online event, scheduled for 2pm on Saturday 18th September, will be a talk by Dr Evan Smith on the CPGB and anti-racism, based on Dr Smith’s book, British Communism and the Politics of Race. The talk will explore the CPGB’s role in the British anti-racism movement from the 1940s to the 1980s. Researching Rutherglen Publisher Peter Walsh
SLHS members Tom Davidson and Stewart Maclennan are researching Rutherglen socialist propagandist/publisher Peter Walsh, who began selling socialist literature from a van in Glasgow in 1893, aided by a Mr Hyder. He seems to have had links with the ILP and the organisations of the local Irish diaspora. His publishing focussed on Irish and Scottish radicalism, with reprints of Peter Mackenzie's Life and Trial of Thomas Muir, Andrew Hardie's account of the 1820 rising, the writing of James Fintan Lalor, plus British Horrors in Ireland under the pen-name 'Daniel O’Connell’. All appeared, where dated, post-WW1, c1919-1922. Other items are pamphlets on Peterloo and early 1920s miners' campaigns, and all published from Walsh's address at 24 Greenbank Street, Rutherglen.
